Thanks to scary retail vacancy rates, you’ve probably seen more temporary Halloween costume shops pop up this year. As holiday season kicks into high gear, more of these pop-up stores will likely appear in your local mall, only to disappear after the first of the year.

With the closing of Circuit City and other big retailers, mall owners are filling empty spaces with holiday-themed stores that sign two- or three-month leases, according to an article in USA Today.

After realizing the bulk of its sales happened around the holidays, Hickory Farms began opening temporary shops about 15 years ago, said USA Today.

The U.S. retail vacancy rate hit 7.6 percent this year, according to CoStar, a commercial real estate research and marketing company. Malls and other retail areas benefit from temporary stores by making them more attractive, and hopefully, attracting more shoppers.
