It is becoming very easy for entrepreneurs to start a business these days. This is due to the launch of various websites that cater to specifically serve the interest of engineers and tech experts. ‘FounderDating’ is one such website that is designed to split technical expertise from management skills. As tech companies look for highly competent technical professionals, such sites serve the companies right.
Jessica Alter, creator of FounderDating says “It’s really important to have people with complementary skill sets.” ‘Formspring’ is another such website that caters to serve engineers. Here people can post questions and seek answers from others. Such websites have gained importance in Silicon Valley as without them any job event finds more number of managers than technical experts. The users of Formspring are found to post 10,000 answers per minute during peak times. Ade Olonoh, CEO, says, “It’s really more hard-core engineering that needs to go behind sites like ours.”
Other tech jobs sites also are reporting an increase in postings. ‘Dice.com’ reports 38 percent jump during the span of last one year. At ‘TheLadders.com’, listings for tech positions have surged up to 65 percent. Marc Cenedella, Chief Executive Officer at The Ladders, says, “A year ago engineers were getting one offer and taking it. Now we’re seeing engineers with two, three, or four offers.” Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported a 2.8 percent rise in employment relating to computer systems design and other services.
Small startup companies, however, experience a squeeze as they find it difficult to retain technical talent in competition posed by large tech companies. Big organizations like Twitter, Facebook, and Google can offer higher packages and other benefits that lure good talent. But then, nowadays, it has also become easier for engineers to start a company of their own without partners and experience in fundraising. It is because servers are available at much affordable rates and there is no need to invest million of dollars. Moreover, the websites open the opportunity to recruit top class talent.
