Have you ever wondered what makes the difference in those entrepreneurs that are successful and those that never seem to be able to make a go of it? They all have their own ideas and customs, but a few basics seem to run steadily through the lives of each one. So what makes them successful? Here are their tips.
Wake up Early
There are so many reasons for this. Some of the most obvious are:
- Fewer distractions- the early morning offers distraction free time to take care of business issues that require full focus, but also to deal with personal issues. Pray, read the Bible, meditate, read a book for fun, or just enjoy some peace and quiet to remind yourself it doe still exist.
- Will Power- there is a greater abundance of it in the morning, meaning issues that require tough action will be handled much more successfully than later in the day. Whether business related or personal, such as exercise, the morning is the time to tackle these issues. Will power is much like energy, it fades throughout the day.
- Start on a positive note- you know that when you are rushed in the morning nothing seems to go right the rest of the day. Giving yourself adequate time to organize and take care of what needs to be done in the morning without rushing just makes the day go better.
“Find somebody else to run [your] business on a day-to-day basis. Don’t always try to sit in the driver’s seat yourself. Don’t always try to be the top person in the building. If you can, be brave… give them your title–and step aside. Then you can start thinking about the bigger picture.” -Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group
Even if you are in the office every day, which you should be, there is no reason for you to have to handle every single detail on your own. The key is ensuring you have good people that will keep you aware of the details and how they are being handled so those that need your attention will get it. Otherwise, this one little tip will free you up to work on bigger picture issues in the long run.
Trust Your Gut over Computers
Whether it is a spreadsheet, a software program, or a computer generated report, the information in it is only as good as the human that did the data entry. No one knows your business like you, and if you sense an issue be certain to investigate relentlessly until you are comfortable with the information.
Pay Attention to Detail, and Learn When to let it Roll
Details are important, so you must be aware of them even if you are not directly handling each and every one, as noted above. That said, realize that stuff happens no matter how much or how little control you have. Learning to learn from this “stuff,” let go, and move on is imperative to success.
Be Nice, When Possible
Sometimes it isn’t possible. Sometimes a tough guy attitude is necessary to success. However, being a jerk just for the sake of being a jerk, or to incite fear from others, is not the way to success not matter how much to the contrary it may seem. Play nice when you can.
