Entrepreneurs are known as creative spirits and free thinkers. Those are great traits when it comes to coming up with a great business idea and getting it up and running, but it takes more than that to actually own a business and keep it running successfully. Following are three traits of successful business owners.
A successful business owner knows that he or she cannot have set hours. Sure, they can say they will be at the business at certain times, but the fact is that when you own a business you are basically always on call. It is your baby. You have to be available whenever you are needed, which could be the middle of the night or the middle of vacation. Training a great manager can help, but as the owner, it all rests on your shoulders in the end. This means that you have to be disciplined enough to stay on top of things, get there when you need to get there, and manage the finances properly. Many businesses have failed because the owner, excited to be their own boss, either did not work enough or took too much money out of the business for personal use.
This is really two-fold. To run a successful business organization is a must. Files and papers need a place and they need to be there, finances need to be in order, and time needs to be managed properly. Time management is not always equated with organization, but organizing your time is just as important as organizing your space.
Discipline and organization do not lend themselves to flexibility, but it is still needed to be successful at running a business. If you are disciplined financially and organized enough to ensure all your equipment gets the necessary regular maintenance in hopes that you will not have to finance new equipment, the time may still come when you need new equipment. If you do not have the cash, you must be flexible enough to realize that financing may be necessary. If you are organized with the employee schedule, you still have to be flexible enough to be able to work with them when scheduling conflicts arise.
Of course not having these traits does not mean you cannot be successful at owning your own business, it just means you need to be aware of your weaknesses and surround yourself with people that are strong in these areas.
