Yelp’s popularity has exploded in recent years. Reviewers and store owners alike are posting feedback, pictures, and responses online for the world to see. Everything from optometry clinics and post offices has Yelp ratings now.
Given how frequently people rely on Yelp today, it is safe to say that it can really help or hurt a business—especially small businesses that are just starting out. Read on for tips on navigating Yelp—as a business owner.
1. Read Reviews
Reviews can actually be totally fake. Some restaurant owners have reported reviews of their food before their doors had even opened (Yelp editors will remove fake reviews, if brought to their attention, so if you notice a review that has to be fake, contact customer service). =
2. Brace Yourself
Many business owners have reported positive reviews being taken down or “filtered” by Yelp. The company claims to do this in case the reviews are fake or monetized reviews. Of course this is not fair, but it is one of the downsides of the technology age—there is so much information out there about everything that it can be difficult to tell what is real and what is fabricated. Unfortunately, Yelp does not give the benefit of the doubt, so reviews perceived as false —even positive reviews—can be taken down.
3. Respond to Comments
More and more store-owners have been doing this lately. Thank positive reviewers for their glowing comments, and ask negative reviewers for a second chance — perhaps even offering a refund if the purchase was something small. The more attention you give your customers, the more dedicated you seem.
4. Post Professional Pictures
Most Yelp pages have pictures posted by customers, but these pictures are often low-quality cell-phone photographs, with grainy quality or unflattering lighting. Instead, upload professional pictures of your own, and use one of these nice photos as the thumbnail photo. Put your company’s best foot forward.
5. Employ Great Customer Service
Some customers who don’t end up buying anything from your store will still post a review on Yelp simply from the great customer service they received. Never underestimate the power of helpfulness and a good attitude.
