How many times have you wished for more hours in a day?
Good news! In 2015, you will definitely find some extra time – one whole “leap second,” to be exact.
Seems the earth’s irregular rotation causes clocks to move slightly out of sync as the earth slows down. So, every now and then, scientists add a leap second to even things out with our universal clock system. In fact, experts have done this 26 times since 1972 and will reset clocks once again on June 30, at 11:59:60 (that’s right) p.m.
So, as a small business owner, what can you do with that extra second? Not much, obviously, but it’s a good time to discuss time-saving reminders:
Meetings, meetings, meetings: Nothing is more draining than unproductive meetings. Whether it’s a regular staff talk or an off-site planning session, be sure you have an agenda, a definite end time, and a “no off-topic” policy.
Emails and social media: Every time your digital device rings, dings, tweets, or pings, you probably stop what you’re doing and reply. To ensure better concentration, it’s time to set new habits and assign daily times to open and reply to email.
Calendar mayhem: If your business is a little larger than small, you may find yourself in constant meetings or constant interruptions and finding your calendar quickly booking up. Try this: block out a little time every day to dedicate to your work. This time is not flexible for other meetings (unless something is truly urgent).
As for that extra leap second this summer, savor the moment of being a small business entrepreneur and take a deep breath.
