It’s encouraging to see how far small business management has come. Once upon a time, when you thought about a small company, you may have visualized a taskmaster boss who operated for profit at any cost (think Ebenezer Scrooge) with underlings scurrying quickly to complete their tasks. They succeeded, to be sure, but it was a cold, impersonal workplace.
Not so long ago, I worked at one such company; and in a sign of the decades prior, so did my grandfather.
Times have certainly changed, and today’s employees expect to be treated fairly in return for their hard work and dedication – especially fresh-out-of-school candidates.
Your employees are a crucial part of making your small business a success, so it’s important to show that you genuinely care about them. Here are some ways to show your appreciation.
- Meal time – Who doesn’t enjoy free food? Bring in breakfast or lunch once a week or even once in a while and host an impromptu roundtable.
- Friendly competition – Take a top-performing team or employee to dinner once a quarter.
- Group outings – Close early on a summer Friday and host a company picnic or take a trip to the local carnival, providing game tickets for all.
Be good to your employees by getting to know them, and they’ll be good to your small business.
