It’s almost that time. The school year is in the home stretch. Visions of long summer days are just beyond the horizon. Also coming quickly: Intern season.
Take a few moments to consider hiring an Intern, someone who can play a vital role in your small business, especially over the summer months.
Why Interns? Why not is more like it! Selected wisely, Interns can help with daily work and free you up, even temporarily, from the more mundane aspects of your establishment. Interns also provide a fresh perspective, bringing their technology and social media savvy to your business. Refer back to your business model and make sure you have an on-boarding plan in place that shows where an Intern can immediately begin to add value. (Remember, Interns are not here to run chores, so don’t view them as go-fers.)
Where can you find these worker bees? Interns looking for on-the-job experience are usually college students, but don’t discount the brightest and best from your local high school as well. Check with guidance counselors at your local schools and universities about how to expedite the process.
In lieu of a paycheck, many schools offer course credit or community service hours. You may save a few dollars, but this does not let you off the hook for all responsibilities. You may be asked to write a letter of recommendation or speak with their sponsor. In addition, you might consider funding their commuting costs, if applicable, or provide lunch one day a week.
And chances are good that your Intern’s parents, neighbors, and friends are also your customers. So, a positive experience for the Intern could mean additional revenue for your business.
