The commute to your small business may be short or long or somewhere in between. But have you thought about everyone else commuting to their jobs and the toll it takes? Might there be some way you can insert your small business to ease their routine, providing a service, product, or simply a way to make their days a touch less stressful?
This idea came to mind the other day as I boarded a train for the big city. There, outside the station, as he has been parked for many years was, as we commuters affectionately call him, the Deli Cart Man. It’s literally a deli on wheels, providing coffee and donuts – the usual fare.
That’s one small business coming to the needs of travelers on the beaten path. What other establishments can be as accommodating? You may be surprised by the possibilities:
- Doctors and dentists:
While the small town physician making house calls may be a thing of the past, if a local doctor or dentist provides evening or weekend hours, image how appreciative patients would be.
- Auto repair shops:
There’s just no way most commuters can get to you between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., during the week. Some local repair shops advertise they are open late every night. You’ll have to staff accordingly, but customers would certainly be grateful.
- Dry cleaners:
My favorite cleaners is waiting for me at 7:30 a.m., on my way to work, which is most helpful when I’m down to my last dress shirt.
- Cafes and Coffeehouses:
One of the reasons the Deli Cart Man does so well is that the closest coffee shop is, well, not so close. And many of the most specialized stores open after 8:00 a.m., which is too late for commuters. Consider a few early mornings with ready-to-go breakfasts, and you’ll be surprised by the response.
So, the next time you are commuting, think about your needs and what would work for you? Those same needs will certainly apply to your customers. And don’t forget to let them know you are looking out for them – with local ads, coupons, and notes on your online blog!
