Back in the day, when I worked for a small advertising agency, we would always enter industry award competitions on behalf of our clients as well as for our own small business. It was a great way to gain recognition for the clients and for ourselves.
Recently, I was struck by one of those in-elevator screen stories about a small business contest sponsored by one of the best-known home personalities, Martha Stewart. Entrepreneurs who work in the fields of crafts, design, food, and style would enter to be recognized.
That’s just one genre; there are plenty of other industry awards out there, so get into the game!
The benefits of entering an awards contest are numerous: regional and national recognition, meeting colleagues, attending events and networking, and maybe, depending on the prize structure, a trophy or monetary award.
And should, or rather, when you win a business award, there are plenty of marketing-related approaches to tout your award (and bring more recognition to yourself and your business):
Promote your win. Let everyone know you and your business were honored on your Website, in your advertising, and in your shop signage and literature.
Brag on yourself. Proudly show off your trophy, plaque, certificate, etc., in a place of honor in your establishment. That way, everyone can see that you’ve made it!
Thank your customers. Consider holding a special event, day, or even an afternoon where you can say “thank you” in person to your customers who got you were you are today.
Side note: Local newspaper editors love to feature small businesses and their achievements, so don’t forget to contact your roaming reporter with your big news. For instance, in New Jersey, the TAPinto network of online newspapers is always looking for interesting local stories, including first anniversary stories.
But before you start to celebrate, search your industry magazines, websites, and such to find appropriate contests and competitions. It will be well worth your time, effort, and possible entry fee, with all the additional attention your business should receive. Good luck!
