“The Millennials are coming! The Millennials are coming!”
Paul Revere was practically a millennial himself when he announced the impending arrival of the British. Today’s fresh faces entering the workforce, often referred to as Millennials, are indeed proactive in the workplace. They also are pro-environment, pro-technology, pro-social responsibility, and inclined to think outside the box.
Are you ready for them?
Every generation offers something new to the workforce. And when you, as a small business owner, plan to hire a new employee, you should consider the following aspects of the newest generation to hit the pavement.
Studies continue to show this new generation is not just about the money. They want to know that their company does good work in the community, is green-focused, and genuinely cares about the welfare of its employees. Flexible work hours and the ability to work remotely are important; healthcare plans are also important; and accepting and requesting their input and ideas are critical.
A fall skit on late night weekend television poked fun at this group of young workers, calling them “entitled.” From my experience, I respectfully disagree.
In fact, Millennials I have encountered recently present themselves as hard-working, dedicated adults who are looking for the good in their respective organizations, but within limits.
If these tenets are not part of your business culture, you might not have a match for your small business. Be honest with the candidates and be honest with yourself. Of course, you will make the smartest choice that helps your small business succeed.
