The holiday season is the season of shopping. There is a mad rush every year to find the best deals, and for many businesses, more profits are made during this time than at any other time of the year. Small businesses can get in on the action too, but you need a plan. A simple plan well executed can help make sure your businesses doesn’t miss out on all the season has to offer.
Tailor Your Deals
If you are small enough, you likely know your customers and their habits individually. During this time of year, most people are not shopping for themselves. Try using this information, along with what you know about their past habits, to tailor a promotion that they will not be able to resist. For example, if you know that every six weeks they purchase $50 or $100 in clothing in one size, but in the last quarter of the year they typically purchase a couple of hundred dollars on accessories such as shoes, handbags, or jewelry, then you can send them a coupon for a discount on these items.
Start Advertising Now
First, plan your general promotions. Will have Black Friday deals, Small Business Saturday deals, or both? Will you have promotions that last whole season or a new one each weekend, offer a giveaway on social media, or send coupons to customers on your email list? Make the plan, then start advertising ASAP. Get the word out and build the anticipation as much as possible, perhaps by offering special giveaways. Preferably it will happen on site and across several shopping days so you can get as many customers through the doors as possible.
Be prepared. Have plenty of popular inventory. You don’t want to sell out and have customers go find the product somewhere else. Set out light snacks and water, or at least offer them for sale. Shopping makes people hungry, and if they can grab a bite there they are more likely to keep shopping rather than leave to find food. Have comfortable seating. Not too much, because you do not want them to just hang out and not shop, but you don’t want anyone to stop shopping just because their feet hurt. Lastly, order extra supplies. Make certain you have extra receipt tape, paper towels, and toilet paper. Running out of any of these things could spell disaster.
