As we neared the conclusion of an enjoyable family vacation recently, it occurred to me that I had taken more than 200 photos over the course of the week – photos of locations we visited, vibrant scenery and wildlife, and even unique and unusual local signage. Then it hit me that many people around us were doing the exact same thing.
Selfies. Scenery. Dinners. Desserts. Capturing a moment in time and, like most of the world on social media, posting or “pinning” the memory soon after.
Yes, social media has taken on a life all its own. Instead of wondering why everyone is staring at a tiny screen, why not capitalize on this social phenomenon of photo taking and make it part of your marketing mix?
- Say it with pictures. Word of mouth takes an illustrative (and profitable) turn when you ask customers to share their experiences through photos. Welcome their posts on your social media sites. Just be sure to list ground rules, set appropriate permissions, and assign someone to monitor frequently.
- Bulletin board pride. A nearby burger joint has a Wall of Pride spotlighting guests enjoying their fare, along with customers wearing the store t-shirt at local events. How might this apply to you? Our sons’ dentist has a wall with smiling, young patients, which calms the kiddies and acts as a testimonial for parents.
- Contest options. Encourage patrons to participate in a photo contest about your small business. Keep the rules simple (such as taking the shopping bags with your business’ name along on trips around the globe and including the bag in photos). Set a prize or prizes, and tout the winners.
You already knew a picture was worth a thousand words. Gain a thousand “likes” and it really becomes a story worth telling.
