Good help is hard to find, and that is as true as it ever was. There are many more ways today to check out the help before you hire them. Social media can be a true treasure when it comes to hiring, but you must be careful. Judging and crossing lines on social media can be a tedious game to play. Done correctly however, social media can be a fabulous recruiting tool.
Pick Your Platform
While there are now more social media platforms than ever, pick and choose from which ones you choose to recruit. LinkedIn is a good choice because it is designed for that very reason. Potential employees are likely going to put their best foot forward, and that is a good thing. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are okay to get a taste of character, if you have access. Use caution, however, in the degree to which you let it affect your judgment of their ability to do the job.
So What Matters?
Some things should matter, and some shouldn’t. What matters to you as an employer is going to be different than what matters to me as an employer. It all depends on the business owner and the nature of the business itself. A Facebook page can give you an idea of an applicant’s personality, which will be able to help you understand their ability to work well with the manager and staff you already have in place. It is hard to keep personal judgements on life decisions out of the picture, so be aware of that before you start down the social media path.
Ability to do the Job
You may be able to get a feel for an applicant’s ability to do the work from social media, depending on what the work is. If you need someone who is technically savvy or likeable, and you see a stellar page or high friend count with a lot of likes and shares, you can factor that into your decision. For some jobs, you will not be able to see anything about their ability to do the job from their social media. It is hard to tell if someone is a good accountant from their Twitter feed.
