It was just two days after Christmas and I was still in the holiday spirit when I spied the Valentine’s Day displays already up on my local supermarket’s seasonal aisle’s shelves.
While some shoppers grumbled, we all know that’s how businesses of all sizes keep the cash register ringing: Staying one step – and one holiday – ahead of the customer, reminding them what’s next on the gifting agenda.
Now, as cupid nears, you might want to consider showing some appreciation to your customers as well as your employees by thinking about them this Valentine’s Day. Here are some heartfelt suggestions for this holiday of amour:
- Holiday-focused specials. This year, Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday in the middle of Presidents’ Day Weekend. JACKPOT! Especially for restaurants, hotels, florists, and other romance-focused establishments. Be sure to promote your specials as much and as often as possible. And don’t be shy about extending specials into a weekend-long event. Start on Friday, or even Thursday, and keep the offers rolling.
- Tokens of generosity. Consider adding a little something extra onto the menu to make date night more special or onto a hotel stay, showing customers you genuinely appreciate their business. Mints or chocolates on the pillow are nice; a split of champagne for a couple staying a couple of nights is nicer.
- And your employees, too. Say, “I’m glad you’re on my team” with a small token of appreciation that goes a long way with your staff. While you can’t buy everyone a 5 lb. box of chocolates if you have 200 employees, you can leave chocolate-covered strawberries or other holiday-themed treats (remembering to offer alternatives for those with food allergies) in conference rooms or break areas.
By showing your entrepreneurial – and softer – side this Valentine’s Day, customers and employees will say, “Be Mine” when it comes to your small business.
