As a business owner, you may feel the desire to give back to your community, and that’s great. When you achieve a certain amount of recognition, you have a platform from which you can advocate for certain causes. Supporting various non-profit organizations that aim to make the world a better place is not only the right thing to do, but it’s also a way to further make yourself known to the community. It’s truly a win-win situation.
Read on for how to best get involved in the community, and give something back:
1. Support Organizations
Non-profit organizations are always in need of money, especially in smaller communities where the population is less dense. Lots of well-known companies regularly donate money to good causes in the country. For example, Sam’s Club often donates lots of money to the Food Bank, and even sends employees to volunteer at the organization sometimes. This collaboration makes sense because both entities are food providers. Find a cause that makes sense in your area. If you own a retail clothing store, partner with Goodwill or another business that collects second-hand clothes. If you run a farm, partner with an organization that aims to ensure animals are raised in humane conditions.
2. Donate Proceeds
Every month in the calendar is associated with some kind of disease prevention. For example, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and during this time, a lot of companies will donate proceeds to this cause or get involved in raising money somehow. If there’s a cause that’s important to you, consider donating a portion of your proceeds during that time to an organization. You’ll get involved in something that’s meaningful to you, while also encouraging shoppers to buy from you and contribute to the cause.
3. Hire Open-Mindedly
Often, business owners have a specific mold of an employee in mind. Some entrepreneurs may steer away from hiring old people, while some may avoid hiring young people. One way of giving back to the community is to be more open-minded in the hiring process. Don’t discard a resume just because the individual is still in high school or because he is in his 70s. Giving an opportunity to someone who might not get a chance at other companies is a way of helping the community.
4. Plan Outings
Bring your employees along for a day of doing good in the community. You can pick one day — or even several days each year — when you and some of your employees go to the Food Bank, or the homeless shelter, or other place that needs help. This will expose you to the community, and also encourage helpfulness in the people who work with you.
It’s important for entrepreneurs to give back to the community. As you can see above, giving back doesn’t just mean giving away money. There are many ways you can help make the community you live in a better place. For more information on how to strengthen your business, visit www.biz2credit.com.
