Every year there is one date that looms on the calendar, bringing stress and anxiety to many – April 15th. It’s Tax Day, after all.
But just about every small business should welcome this time of year and jump on the Tax Day bandwagon. With many people receiving (or anticipating) refunds from their taxes, you may receive additional sales. Our local postal workers tell me that tax refunds are the reason for an influx of packages to area homeowners, and they are expecting more as the season continues.
Somewhat ironically, local post offices also become the center of the media attention when April 15th approaches, as the annual procrastinators complete their documentation in the building to ensure a timely postmark.
So, perhaps this is a great time to market an event or offer special discounts for both the stressed out customers as well as those who have some extra income to spend. Here are few tips to make your business even more welcoming this April:
- Tax Day treats. Who wouldn’t welcome a free cup of coffee or piece of pie? Whatever your small business may be, advertise a “Tax Day Special” and provide snacks and a respite from the tax process.
- De-stressing opportunities. More closely tied into the season, CPAs and Tax Services can offer a back or neck massager on the premises, helping waiting clients get their stress out. (It’s a great chance to work with another local business, too.)
- Accommodating hours. For those in the food services business, why not stay open a little later around April 15th, offering a place to review or recoup?
- Special offers. For those enjoying a tax refund, offer a reason to celebrate with a sale or two on select items. After all, spring is just around the corner. And who doesn’t want to think ahead to warmer days?
Tax Day doesn’t mean everyone has to walk around with long faces, so think of creative ways your small business can play a role in this growing national event.
