Everywhere I turn, people are utilizing their mobile devices, reading the latest gossip, checking out sports scores, and scheduling their daily lives. It’s a wonder that “old fashioned” paper calendars are even needed.
But they are.
Check out the local gift and office supply stores – they still sell them. And probably most homes you visit have a calendar hanging in a central location with birthdays, meetings, and events noted.
For this reason, I was not surprised to receive a community calendar in the mail. Oversized, glossy, and filled with seasonal photos of area landmarks, this calendar, which focused on three neighboring towns, is chock full of township information, from recycling dates and local events to municipal contacts and phone numbers.
What caught (and held) my eye the most were the advertisements. From the local bakery and real estate offices to the area car dealership and your family-owned pharmacy, there were at least 12-14 ads listed every month, several duplicated. The larger ones ringed the top half, framing the main photo. The smaller ads ran along the bottom, month portion of the piece.
The ads are fairly simple, including the basics: business details, address, phone number, and website addresses. Some reference social media. Many feature photos of local businesspeople. Some are meant to be used as coupons. Others asked the reader to mention the ad for a discount.
It’s never too soon to think ahead to next year. Inquire at your local town hall about the yearly calendar. You may be pleasantly surprised by the ad rates and you will have plenty of time to compose an ad.
You never know, your company may be hanging in someone’s kitchen soon, sparking top-of-mind awareness all year long.
