We’ve all seen the video snippets – the very public presentations where someone receives a jumbo-size check for winning something. Whether it’s Publishers Clearinghouse or the state lottery, the check is oversized and overbearing. But you know something important has happened when someone rolls out a very large check.
Even though the whole scenario may seem a bit over-the-top, you find yourself looking anyway. For this reason, the oversized check concept may just be a marketing approach set to catch customers’ and potential customers’ attentions.
Here are some significant reasons to hold your own jumbo check ceremony to market your small business:
- Team player. There is always a local youth sports team that could use a sponsor. Get out the checkbook and make a donation. Present the oversized check to the team and manager and be sure to contact the media for a photo op – or take your own and dash off a press release to go along with the photo. Post on your website, Facebook page, etc.
- Store contest. This promotion also works well with a large gift card or oversized gift certificate. Promote the contest in-store and online, and when it’s time to announce a winner, make an event out of it. Moreover, be sure your winner or winners agree to have their photo(s) taken and name mentioned (put that on your entry form), so that you can publicize to the max.
- Charitable causes. Are you giving enough back to the community you serve? I saw where two local restaurants teamed up to provide the receipts of a fundraiser to a local charity. Key participants posed with officials and the check they gave. (Cautionary note: Be sure you are not exploiting this approach, lest you be viewed negatively.)
