Sometimes register tapes and receipts are like looking into a crystal ball. There, right in front of you, you can see into the future with another promotional idea to increase business.
Case in point: A very large and very visible office supply chain. I stopped in last weekend for envelopes and binders, and on my sales receipt was a request to “Refer a business and get rewarded.”
Not a bad idea!
Your small business by its very nature relies on a strong reputation within the community in order to succeed. As it has been for hundreds of years, word of mouth is likely your biggest promotional methodology. But why not consider rewarding referrals for an extra boost?
The cost for both promotion and honorarium can be kept fairly low. (Even the big-box supplier in this scenario was offering just a $5.00 credit for a business-to-business referral).
If you don’t want to go the printed register promotional route, consider advertising this promotion with in-store signage, most likely at the counter with accompanying flyers for referral information and potential rewards. (You will need to ensure active follow-up on any leads provided.) For an even greater reach, put the referral program information on your website and in any advertising you may be placing in local publications and business journals.
The person who referred the new business can receive a token of appreciation, which can range from an upsized cup of coffee, to a free appetizer, a promotional shopping bag, or an account credit.
For those new customers coming to you for the first time, entice them with a percentage off coupon or a discount. Win-win.
Now, wasn’t that easy?
