There is much advice on starting and building a business. Most of it is very good advice, but it is almost all general. When it comes to the practicality of choosing a business to start and then actually building it, there is much less advice available. These tips could help.
While choosing to start a business that you are passionate about is great advice, it isn’t always practical. Definitely do not start a business in an area you are not interested in at all, but when starting your own business, whatever it is, be certain you focus on the aspect of it you are most passionate about. Get others to help you with the rest. If you are passionate about cooking and want to open a restaurant, find someone who knows all about the restaurant business to help you with everything except the cooking. You focus on cooking. Keep your your thumb on everything else, don’t let yourself get out of the loop, but focus on your passion for cooking.
When considering what type of business you want to start and how you plan to build it, think about the lifestyle you want to live now, rather than later. This doesn’t mean financially, as profit almost always takes time. Rather, do you want to keep some flexibility, or are you ok with a set schedule? Are you okay with late nights? Do you need to work early mornings and be off the rest of the day? Whatever your lifestyle desires are, make certain the business you start will fit it. If you need to be with your children most of the day, a full scale restaurant may not work. A food truck during the lunch hours and for catering events might be a good compromise.
Once you get the loan, investors, or whatever type of funding you are going for, take a breath. Consider how to use those funds most efficiently, and make a clear list of priorities. It is easy to just jump in, but having a plan that will make the most efficient use of funds is key to success.
Know What You Know
Build a team for the rest. Knowing what you know and what you don’t know is critical for success. Once you have that straight, you can build a stellar team to handle not only the parts of the business you are not passionate about or interested in, but also those parts of the business that you do not know much about.
Whatever the business is, do your research! Research demand, the market and what it wants, and how you can differentiate your company from similar businesses. Differentiation is what will allow you to compete successfully. Will it be better value, lower cost, higher quality, a better location, or some other twist?
