Concert for Bangladesh. Live Aid. Farm Aid.
Every generation has its causes, concepts, and considerations. Some advertise nationally and internationally through various campaigns; others are closer to home and quieter in their promotional approach. Regardless of the decade and cause, there is a common thread from one coming-of-age group to the next – the strong desire to make the world a better place.
You don’t have to look too far to find numerous causes right in your own community.
In my town, there are high school students actively involved in our community’s Relay for Life event, walking the high school track to honor loved ones and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Other young men and women participate in Habitat for Humanity on a local and regional level. And even closer to home, there are families still adjusting to life after Hurricane Sandy, with local charities holding fundraisers and providing assistance.
Getting involved in area causes, fundraisers, and community outreach sends a powerful message to your customers – one that says you are a compassionate business owner who understands the importance of these causes and wants to do your part.
It doesn’t take much effort to play a role and make your presence known. Volunteer your time at the next Blood Drive. Donate water or food at the local pet rescue event. Provide signage for the next fundraiser for families in need.
For ideas, check out the upcoming event section of your local paper or town website. Call your area schools and inquire about planned fundraisers. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to get involved.
And when the day is done, you’re not done yet. Don’t forget to share your small business’ involvement on your web site and social media outlets. Sending a letter to the local paper about the importance of the recent event is a nice touch, too. The organization will thank you, and so will your customers.
