There’s been a lot of talk about the importance of a social media presence. The buzz is all about ensuring your small business is participating online, getting your name out, and establishing your expertise to reach a wider audience.
While the online advertising hype is valid and consistent with trying to attract today’s virtual customer, there is one tried-and-true form of advertising that should not be neglected, especially in warmer weather with more consumers heading outdoors.
The direct mailer.
Your neighbors still receive an abundance of mail every day in the form of newspapers, magazines, town newsletters, and yes – bills and greeting cards (not everything is emailed or texted). Much of it may get tossed (Thursdays are big in our town for bulk flyers). But, if your direct mail piece is eye-catching and sends a succinct message, you may be pleasantly surprised – and pleased – with the results.
Recently, I received a glossy, oversized postcard addressed to “Resident” that caught my attention. The front is a full advertisement featuring a local ice cream store – a national chain with an area franchise. A surprise: the reverse side promotes two local small businesses: one for a car wash and the other for an oil change center that also offers minor car-related services.
Obviously, these businesses were approached for co-op advertising, sharing the cost of the mailer in exchange for a wider audience. The colors are bright throughout, and each business promotes its services along with a variety of coupons, which are good through most of the summer.
And while these small businesses do not have anything in common in terms of products or services, they share the same zip code – a plus for local residents looking for a bargain (and who isn’t?) and merchants closer to home (how convenient!).
Even if you haven’t been involved in co-op advertising opportunities yet, consider turning to your neighboring businesses and joining forces for a local mailer. I know this post card will be on my refrigerator for the summer. Your business could be, too.
