Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed many people (children, tweens, and yes, adults) staring intently at their phones as they wander seemingly haphazardly on the street and around public places. Sometimes alone. Sometimes in small groups. Always with their eyes on their mobile devices.
Released in mid-July, Pokémon Go is a mobile game using a smartphone GPS to locate and potentially catch Pokémon characters. Based on the video game, Pokémon, which Nintendo released in 1995, this new version is sweeping the country – and is all over the news.
The stats are mind boggling – after just one week reports indicated that Pokémon Go had more users than the dating app Tinder and, on Android devices, the game is ranked higher than Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat in Google Play. During this same time period, the app also added more than $7 billion to parent company Nintendo’s market value.
What might all this mean for your small business?
Because the game involves traveling to various spots throughout cities, towns, and in public places, small business retailers can quickly get in on the action. Here are a few tips to make the most of this new phenomenon:
- Welcome Pokémon players to your establishment. Place a sign outside your store, in your window, and on your Web page (as well as social media outlets like Facebook), showing customers that you understand the need to “catch them all.” For an additional incentive for gamers to visit, provide a percentage off if they are on a specific team.
- Invite gamers to drop a “lure” at your location in exchange for in-store rewards, such as a free drink or discount on a meal or item. A lure is an in-game item that attracts Pokémon to a spot for 30 minutes and costs 100 pokecoins.
- Get creative! If you’re in the food or beverage service business, offer a dessert that resembles a Pokémon characters like a Pokeball muffin or a Pikachu cookie and team-colored drinks, such as red for valor, blue for mystic, and yellow for instinct.
It’s a game… so have fun! And remember, your small business can come away a winner.
