Summertime and living is easy, or is it? For a small business owner, summer doesn’t necessarily mean vacation time.
Yes, the weather is warmer, the days are longer, and more customers are (hopefully) spending more time at your locale. You may have waited all year for this magical season when your regulars have more time to browse, dine, or relax at your establishment.
But summer also means your employees are taking their own retreats with family and friends. Schedules were set months ago. Some staff may be taking a whole week, while others may ask for Mondays or Fridays off for longer weekends. In fact, they are probably glancing at the calendar right now, where the schedule shows their time off is fast approaching.
But what about your vacation? If you have not planned time away from your small business this summer, it’s important that you put some plans in motion soon. It doesn’t have to be during the warmer months, but you shouldn’t let an opportunity for your time away pass you by.
Vacation (whether it’s away or a “staycation” at home) is important for your mental and physical state. By taking time off from the business, you are making an effort to de-stress, unplug from the daily business operations, and give yourself a much-needed break.
Time away also allows you to step back from your business, clear your head, and see the big picture of the whole operation. This gives you a chance to think big and dream big without having to deal with the daily issues that may consume your days.
Conversely, you can use time away to examine your business plan that you set last year, analyze what worked, and start planning for the rest of the year. Plus, it’s never too soon to think about 2017.
So, once your employees are back in place and their sunburns have faded, prepare them for your own time away. Set a schedule as to who will be in charge and, as always, prepare for the unexpected, should a crisis occur. With a little advance planning, you will be relaxing, recharging, and unwinding, too.
