With the close of another hot summer, the crisp days of fall are a welcome change. For small business owners, it’s a new season, as well – a season to sell with all the excitement that accompanies a fresh start.
But before you start promoting your merchandise for the fall and upcoming holiday season (that will be another blog for another day), first take some to time to examine your small business through fresh eyes. Sometimes, all you need is a new perspective to discover what needs to be updated for autumn.
- Weather… or not. Businesses are definitely affected by weather throughout the year. Inspect your storefront for any summer-related damage and make repairs as soon as possible. Issues could include cracked sidewalks, broken cement car stops in the parking lot or chipped steps at your entrance. Check that your windows are operating properly and that weatherproofing is in place for those cooler days to come.
- Front of the house. Storefronts also may have become discolored by sun and heavy rain. Decide if your sign needs to be cleaned or repainted. Is your awning faded from the sun or torn from punishing winds?
- The inside story. Don’t forget that summer finds its way indoors, too. Consider an overall carpet cleaning to freshen things up. Wood flooring could always use a new polish for the season, and if your walls look dingy, think about a fresh coat of paint.
- What’s standing out? Along with the new season, examine your inventory to ensure it is ready for fall, too. If your merchandise is still summer-focused, especially on your displays or high traffic areas, consider creating a clearance or sale section to make room for current seasonal items. If you offer something unique or still in demand with the new season, consider adding autumnal accents to liven up the space, giving it an updated look.
Convinced everything is in proper order? Ask someone else to take a look around and confirm what you’re seeing.
The appearance of your business affects your reputation, making all the difference in attracting new customers and retaining present ones. By sprucing up your small business, your customers will see that you truly care about the impression you make.
