It’s like watching the giant countdown clock in Times Square heralding in a New Year, except in this case the countdown is on. It’s the 2016 Holiday Season!
So much to do. So much to sell. So little time.
Now that we are past Thanksgiving, it’s all a quick slope through the most wonderful (and busiest) time of the year. Here are some last-minute tips to help small business owners through the harried final few weeks of the year:
* Be well-rested. A productive, long day in the shop means a good night’s sleep right before – and as much as you can. In addition to being more alert, when you are well-rested you are more likely to be the upbeat shopkeeper your customers will appreciate – especially when they are harried.
* Celebrate smartly. ’Tis the season for excess, so watch your intake of calories and holiday spirits when you’re participating in local events. Stand closer to the crudités and further away from the dessert table. All sorts of goodies make their way to the break room, the front desk, and unoccupied counters in between. Avoid gouging by permitting yourself an occasional treat. Besides, smarter choices are likely to leave you less tired.
*Rejuvenate, recharge. For small business retailers, Christmas should be a day of rest. Don’t fall into the Big Box trap and even think about opening your small business, unless you provide an essential service or your Traditional Holiday Buffet is the talk of the tri-county area. Your employees will thank you and you’ll thank yourself.
With a deep breath – and thoughtful planning – your small business can enjoy a very happy and calm holiday season. Watch for more holiday ideas as the season unfolds.
