Waiting in line at various small businesses over the years, I’ve always been aware of the small boards holding coins or clear boxes of change located on counters asking for donations to national and local charitable organizations.
Whether it’s the local coffee shop or the family-run dry cleaners, these businesses chose to make a difference in the lives of others. And as a customer, you have the choice to contribute without feeling pressured.
Charitable donations are admirable and easy to do. Select one of the many charities available and place a sponsored, branded card or box on your counter or another highly visible location in your business.
But how to decide what organization to best represent or coincide with your small business?
- Choose a cause you believe in. Choose something you can speak to intelligently and with conviction as customers may have questions. For instance, our dry cleaners know a family with an autistic child and wanted to help contribute to educational and medical endeavors for brain development.
- Find a local food bank. Not just at the holidays, but all year long, local food pantries welcome and are in need of non-perishable foodstuffs. They also will gladly take monetary donations to offset unanticipated costs, such as repairs.
- Support a local family in need. Sometimes, an area fraternal organization will solicit on behalf of a family who has been affected by a fire or another hardship. Here’s where you can help spread the word of this worthy cause. Chances are good that your customers heard about the situation and are looking for ways to help, too.
- Consider assisting children half a world away. You may recall from your childhood, the boxes of UNICEF at Halloween. Causes such as this one remain prevalent today and can use all the assistance possible.
In this season of giving, consider making your small business a receptacle of good will.
