Fortune cookies and your future. Perhaps one of the more enduring childhood food memories involves sitting with your family and reading your fortune aloud at a Chinese restaurant. Yet, small business owners should take note of a new approach some fortune cookie factories are taking to reach their audience.
Recently, my family enjoyed a traditional Chinese meal. When it came time to crack open the fortune cookies, I was pleasantly surprised that, in addition to the message (mine read: “The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose.”), were the words: “How about another fortune?” with a website address.
What better way to lead your customers back to your business for more information and, potentially, more sales, than including your website address on every type of communication you provide to them. Your company’s name, street address, and your store’s Internet address should be on your sales receipts, the promotional flyers your employees stuff into shopping bags and, of course, in emails you regularly send to your customers with information about new services, products, and special events.
But don’t stop there. Make sure your customers want to keep visiting your website, providing an easily accessible, ever-changing, and reader-friendly site with inviting prose. Your company’s story is sure to provide a personal touch. Photos and information about recent customer events and community activities that prominently feature your business will demonstrate your commitment to your neighborhood.
If you are not using your website to promote yourself, here’s a reminder that in the New Year you should make an effort to recharge, revamp, and reach out to your customers by promoting yourself online. And if all this technology is a little overwhelming, consider enlisting your interns (or a savvy employee who knows their way around the Internet or a smartphone) to help you update your website.
