Do you have what it takes to be a great leader? Perhaps you don’t possess those qualities most traditionally associated with leaders, but you may be better suited for the job than you think. These qualities are not often considered when thinking about leaders, but the best of the best definitely possess them. Do you?
The Ability to Inspire
Leaders get done what needs to be done, but those who can inspire others to want to do what needs to be done, and convince them to love it, are something special.
There is more to leading that just telling others what to do. Creating an environment where they love doing what they do and do not need you to tell them is what inspiration is all about.
A leader is completely transparent with those they lead when it comes to the job at hand. Let them know how great they are, or not. If they are not doing their best, let them know as much and then empower them to do better. Give them what they need to do their job the best they can. Not letting them know they need to improve isn’t going to help anyone.
By the same token, being transparent with your own struggles and mistakes in the job is priceless.
Leaders are not always associated with patience. A leader that can take the time to ensure those they lead know what to do, how to do it, and be patient while they learn will go far.
A Great Poker Face
This may seem contradictory to transparency, but it is simply for a different type of situation. “Never let them see you sweat” is a great motto for a leader. If there are problems in the upline, don’t let it shake those you lead. Stay calm and cool, and they will be more likely to continue giving their best.
I am sure most people expect a leader to be decisive, but I am not sure it is often considered to be a quality. The willingness to step up and make a decision when no one else is huge for a leader however. In addition, the ability to change a decision if needed, and to not become too prideful to do so, is even more valuable.
Great leaders can be made. You don’t have to be born that way. The best leaders, however, possess these qualities among others, whether naturally or learned. Maybe you have what it takes after all.
