Managing a team is not for the faint of heart. There is no denying it is not easy. The responsibility for the output and the outcome rests on your shoulders in the end. There is always room for improvement as a manager, even if you are the best. One way you can do this is to learn to listen to your team’s actions and see what they are trying to say.
For example, if you see low productivity, this could be due to a lack of motivation. They could be telling you several different things. Here is how to figure it out.
Check Their Workload
Do they feel like it is pointless to be productive because they are never going to accomplish what they need to anyway? If the workload is too much, it can be overwhelming. Burnout can come quickly, but motivation is just as likely to wane because getting anything thing done just seems pointless. If there is not end in sight, no main goal other than more work coming, some changes may need to be made.
Make Sure They Are in the Know
Your team is working for you. They have a right to know what they are working for, and how you intend to get there. Let them in on both your vision and your plan. If you do not have vision or a plan, remedy that situation. Then, let them in on it. You will likely see productivity increase if they can clearly see what they are working towards.
Let Them Know They Matter
It is a common mistake that managers make to constantly remind employees they are replaceable. Sure they are replaceable. Everyone is, and no one should act as though they are not. However, good employees that are constantly reminded of this are going to struggle with trying to do their best. Humans tend to work harder when they feel respected and needed, and it is hard to work your best if it doesn’t matter anyway, because you are replaceable. Let them know that you want them doing the job, because you believe they are the best ones to do it.
When they do well, are they rewarded at all? Even just a “job well done team” can work wonders. Take a moment to acknowledge a job well done, and watch them work harder to do the next job just as well if not better.
