It is no secret that the human body was made to move. However, today’s business culture makes moving difficult. Many of us spend the majority of our time sitting at a desk, and even when you regularly work out before or after work, it is difficult to make up for hours upon hours of being sedentary.
The situation is not hopeless though. These exercises and tips can help you keep moving while still getting your office work done.
Use What you Have in Your Office
- Desk: Stand facing your desk holding on to the edge, and take a few steps back. Then do a series of 10 to 12 pushups while leaning on your desk, rather than the floor. Doing this a couple of times a day between tasks can help keep your blood flowing and muscles warm.
- Books: Find the largest book in your office. Stand holding it directly above your head with arms fully extended. Then slowly lower it behind your head and neck and back up. Try to do 10 to 12 at a time.
- Imaginary Pencil: While sitting at your desk, straighten your back and pretend you are trying to hold a pencil between your shoulder blades. This is a great stretch when your shoulders are sore from hunching in front of a computer.
Take Advantage of Opportunities to Multi-Task
There are a couple of things you can do without stopping your work if you learn to recognize the opportunities.
For example, if you invest in a headset up can pace while you talk on the phone. This will help you get in more steps for the day.
Calf raises are also easy to do while on the phone or while filing. These are effective and add up fast.
This will help you refocus, feel better, and it is discrete. If you do not do anything else you can take a few minutes to stretch at your desk. You don’t even have to get up. You can roll your neck, arch your back, and do a few shoulder rolls all while sitting in your chair.
Of course some of these tips will work better for some than others, depending on your work atmosphere. If actually doing any of these at your desk isn’t practical for you, consider taking a brisk walk during lunch, or taking the long way around to the restroom. Whatever you do to get moving will help.
