Okay, so maybe not an empire, but it could be. At the very least you could cook your way to modestly successful profits, if not more. If you have a talent for whipping up amazing snacks that your friends rave about, you could definitely turn that talent into a business.
How? It takes time, dedication, and willingness to fail. If you follow some simple steps and grow slowly however, you may not have to worry about failure.
Bring some of your creations with you when you attend parties and get togethers. Share freely and do not give out your recipes. Leave them loving it and wanting more. Pay attention to what they like, and what they request when you are invited.
If you don’t go to many parties, or want more exposure, have your own parties and offer your treats there. Invite your friends, set out your best spread, and pay attention. When the time comes to get serious, you may even want to let them in on what you are doing and offer review cards so they can tell you what they love and what they would change.
Look Into the Law
Once you know you have something, make sure you are legal. Some states have cottage food laws that make it really easy, but you need to be certain you stay within that law. Other states are more stringent and require a business license, inspection, or even a commercial kitchen. Make sure you have all the legal stuff wrapped up before you forge ahead. Doing that part backwards is no fun.
Get the word out that your food is for sale. Let friends know you can cook for their parties, set up a social media account. Ask everyone you know to like and share, offer incentives for doing so, and be consistent with posting.
Set up at a vendor fair with free samples and a price list. Send treats with a promotional brochure to your kid’s school party, and put up flyers in public places. Libraries are a good place to start.
If you have a talent for food you can definitely profit from it without opening a restaurant. You cannot just start selling food however. There are steps that must be taken in an effort to protect yourself and your customers.
