The goal of almost any business owner is for their employees to be more productive. It can be difficult to determine how to actually do that, however. If you give too much freedom, some employees will take advantage. If you give too little, some will feel stifled.
Finding the perfect culture to promote optimal productivity is not easy, mostly because there are so many variables between employees. Research has shown that certain tweaks in the overall atmosphere of the workplace can be helpful.
Let the Sun Shine
If there is any way to get some natural light into the building and to where employees are working, you could see a big change. Humans need natural light to function. It improves mood and health. Our natural response, though often subconscious, to a lack of natural light is sadness, depression, and gloom.
While everyone responds differently, science has shown that the majority functions much more efficiently when exposed to natural light. This may mean you have to add skylights, or rearrange cubes so more of them have a window visible.
If this isn’t possible, shoot for a space outdoors where a break can be taken. It could be as elaborate as a pavilion or gazebo, or as simple as a picnic table. Whatever it is, make it readily available and attractive to use.
Of course you have to spend time at your desk to get the work done, but try to not discourage getting up and moving around. In fact, work to encourage it. Offer a place where walking or even exercising is convenient.
A track or gym in the building or at least nearby is great. Offer discounts to local gyms for off work hours, or just provide incentives for walking around the building during breaks. Maybe those who participate earn an extra half hour on their lunch break on Fridays once a month?
Add a Pop
A pop of color or interesting design can be surprisingly effective. A drab workplace does not promote productivity. The best way to achieve this is with live plants. They can add interest and color, as well as brighten moods and clean the air.
Another option is simply to hang bright, interesting wall décor. It doesn’t have to be unprofessional, just not drab.
