Want to order a cake and need the hours of your local bakery? Have a sudden craving for a special from your favourite deli and want to make sure it’s available before making the trek?
Your customers are definitely navigating their free time more strategically. And in today’s world, they reach for their smartphone, head to the computer, or talk to Amazon’s Alexa for the necessary information.
Or, if your customers are like me – they hang onto local listings of area businesses that come in the mail. No, it’s not the phone book – I don’t know anyone who has one these days – but your town or region probably sends out a business listing with phone numbers, addresses, etc. You may also have one from a regional publication, such as a “Best of…” section.
And it’s definitely worth a look. Not only will you see who your competition is, but you’ll see all the businesses your customers see and all the choices they have.
My annual listing comes from a regional hospital that produces a bi-monthly feature magazine (with a few medical success stories included). Broken out into 17 categories, the topics range from book stores and coffee houses to nightclubs, restaurants, bakeries, and sports spots, from horseback riding to driving ranges.
As I paged through the recent edition, I noticed that a majority of the business listed are not the big box stores, but rather dozens of small businesses located throughout the county.
What’s in it for them? Possibly future advertisers, as there is not an overabundance of ads in this issue; there wouldn’t be enough room in this 56-page publication to include all the businesses in ad format.
By far the big winner in this type of publication is the small business owner who is gaining priceless county wide exposure. The issue looks like a glossy magazine, is easy to read, and perhaps most important for the reader — it’s free.
While my issue just came out, your area may still have one that hasn’t gone to press just yet. Or it’s a great time to plan for next year’s issue. Consider looking into your regional and area publications to see how you can get included in an annual or semi-annual business listing. It will keep your name in close reach and top of mind.
