Sometimes, the entrepreneurs who launch the most successful companies already have the element of fame on their side. But that doesn’t mean it was easy getting to where they got.
Starting a business is a challenge no matter who you are, and there will always be obstacles and naysayers. Here are some inspirational celebrity entrepreneurs and their stories:
- Jessica Alba, The Honest Company
When the actress first decided to build a company that offered natural, non-toxic alternatives for things like skincare products, people didn’t take her seriously. Alba has said that it wasn’t until she got Brian Lee of LegalZoom to work with her that things finally started to move. The business launched in 2011, and it’s now valued at close to $1 billion. It’s safe to say she has proven the naysayers wrong.
- Dr. Dre, Beats Electronics
Dr. Dre was disappointed with Apple’s ear buds and wanted to build a better solution. The rapper worked with Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, and Beats Electronics was born. The brand became extremely popular, and Apple recently purchased the company for $3.2 billion.
- Paul Newman, Newman’s Own
The Hollywood legend set an example for other entrepreneurs looking to do more philanthropic work. Instead of keeping the money for himself, Newman gave 100 percent of the after-tax profits to charity organizations. The company initially only sold salad dressing and popcorm, but the business now offers all kinds of food options, available at most grocery stores. Since it was founded, Newman’s Own has donated approximately $430 million to numerous charities.
- Jennifer Aniston, Living Proof
Aniston’s haircut from the 90’s sitcom Friends will probably go down on history, so it makes total sense that she is now co-owner of Living Proof. The hair-care company was originally founded by biotech researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Aniston has stated that the goal of the company is to make hair care easier and simpler.
- Robert DeNiro, Nobu
The Oscar-winning actor must love sushi, as he co-founded the Nobu restaurant chain, which offers upscale Japanese cuisine. The chain has become internationally well-known and has locations around the world – even in Tokyo and Moscow. DeNiro has had other successful ventures into the restaurant world, too, like the Italian restaurant Locanda Verde in New York.
