Everybody has dealt with it before – that coworker who is always running late and distracting you at work. As a small business owner, you have to understand that some of the employees you hire will not be a good fit for your company. They might have seemed great on paper or at the interview, but their true colors are a little less appealing. Sometimes it may be difficult to tell who these employees may be. Or maybe you like your employees, but times are tough, and you have to figure out whom to let go. Here are some things to keep in mind when deciding which employee you should let go.
Ignored Repeated Warnings – Do you have an employee who just does not seem to listen? One of the most killer attributes in anybody is the lack of listening skills. If you have reminded or warned your employee about something more than three times with no response, it might be time to consider letting him go. Small businesses rely on following of directions and getting things done productively. There are countless employees out there who can listen well and follow directions perfectly. Do not waste your time with someone who cannot.
Hurting Morale – Maybe you have a negative Nancy on your team. Their pessimism brings everybody down, leading to decreased productivity and morale. If you are unfortunate enough to have one of these on your team, please get rid of them immediately. There is already so much uncertainty in the small business world. Anybody who makes life any more difficult at work with their attitude will take a toll on your other employees and you. Do what is best for your company by only keeping those who can maintain a positive attitude through the thick and thin of it all.
Lowering Office Productivity – This one may be a bit harder to catch or quantify. Sometimes this comes in the form of employees who just enjoy socializing too much that it is distracting those around them. Or maybe the employee is lazy and does non-work related tasks all day. No matter what, these employees are just a drain to your pay roll. Keep your eye out for employees who seem to not get much work done. Give them a warning and see if they change their behaviors. If not, do not be afraid to let them go.
Sabotaging Company – In the rare instance that you have an employee who is purposefully hurting the company, make sure to fire them go as soon as possible. Not only is your business being hurt, but they are also setting an example that your business can be taken advantage of. The small business world can be a cutthroat industry, and, in order to succeed, you have to develop a thick skin. This means recognizing employees taking advantage of your small business or its services for their own benefit.
