As a small business owner, you probably spend an inordinate amount of time addressing customers’ needs, concerns, and requests. And when you’re not doing that, you’re making sure all the physical details are in place for your business to run smoothly. In doing so, you may possibly be neglecting the very people who ensure your customers keep coming back – your loyal employees.
Remember, it’s important to take some time to acknowledge your employees’ hard work, and show them that their attention to detail, catering to customers’ requirements, and following through with important issues has been noticed and is appreciated.
- Plan something special. Set a day aside (when you are closed, of course) or make part of a day special for your workers. Bring in breakfast, lunch, or snacks for a nice perk. During the summer months, hold an event just for your staff, such as a dinner out. Or include their families and hold a picnic or barbecue at the local park. The more important aspect is to show (and not just tell) staff that you care and value their time and effort.
- Schedule meaningful reviews. While performance reviews can serve as a reminder for staff to stay on their toes, it’s also an opportunity for you to tell them what a great job they are doing as well as what they may need to improve upon. In turn, your staff can share with you how their position is going, what they hope to achieve in the year to come, and ask any questions they may have. Giving staff one-on-one time with the boss often clears the air and sets a positive tone for the future. Be open to accepting feedback as the best reviews are two-sided.
- Share news. Employees like to feel involved with the business. In fact, the more they know about the daily workings (at least, what applies to them), the more personal the job will feel and the more they will care about its outcome. So, take the time to share what’s happening. If you plan to expand or add an additional location, tell them the good news. Conversely, if you need to make major changes, it’s best to let them know ahead of time so they can be prepared.
Taking a deep breath and thinking about the people who make you look good, will only lead to good things for your business. It’s that personal touch that makes people feel valued and will bring a genuine smile to their faces. That emotion, feeling cared and appreciated, is priceless.
