Small Business Saturday is in the rear-view mirror. The growing holiday season bonanza was months ago and is now months away, but driving past a local small business recently that sells mattresses got me thinking: Why not celebrate Small Business Saturday in some way, shape, or form all year long?
The small business in question posted a large banner in their store window, proclaiming, “Shop Local. Celebrating 62 Years.” Quite an accomplishment! And even though I have driven past this establishment for years, I never knew its years of service, which impressed me. I’m sure other community members are impressed, too.
You don’t have to celebrate your special anniversary to proclaim loyalty to your neighborhood. And you don’t have to wait for the first Saturday after Thanksgiving to remind everyone to shop at your small business. In fact, you want your customers to think about your business…all the time.
Here are a few suggestions to get the word out to your customers year-round:
- Proudly Show Your Age. When promoting your small business specials in weekly flyers, ads, blog posts, web pages, etc., make sure to tout that you are a local business and stress how you’ve served the community. Mention your participation in community events to demonstrate how you’ve specifically given back.
- Throw a Party. Some stores celebrate “Christmas in July.” Other small businesses hold annual birthday parties. Why not hold a mid-year Small Business Day, where you pull out all the stops just before summer kicks into full gear? Or plan a special event, just because. You don’t need a reason to have a party. Get the word out and give customers a reason to stop by.
- Get Creative. Today’s consumer receives an influx of emails and advertisements on a regular basis. Find a way to really get their attention. Outdoor banners are sure to catch their eye. So are photos. Smartphones make everyone a photographer. Let your customers know you want to share their smiling faces on your own site. And promote your own name and logo on items your customers will be proud to wear and carry around like t-shirts, tote bags, and key chains. It’s all about the swag!
