Is your small business seasonal? If you are, it’s likely that your loyal customers have been waiting a while for you to reopen your doors.
Be sure you don’t disappoint.
My husband recently experienced an “Opening Day” at a seasonal business that isn’t quite small but still came away with a lesson for all. His favorite Major League team pulls out all the stops for this grand day; however, they continue to fall short every year.
Properly calculated, you should know well in advance how much will you need in terms of products and services as you anticipate the opening day crowds. And, of course, hiring enough support staff are key factors to successfully start the new season.
If you are an ice cream parlor, recreational business that relies on summer foot traffic, or somewhere seasonally in between, you have to put your best foot forward from the second you open your door. And even before that to best anticipate what the season will bring.
In the case my husband experienced, there was a six-month window where the organization could have prepared properly. And this was not the first time he’s witnessed an unprepared ball park.
What can you do to ensure you open up without a glitch? Plan. Prepare. Practice.
- Plan. Know when you plan to reopen. Circle the date on the calendar and put things in motion for the next season right after you close the previous one. Yes, you are entitled to a vacation. So, enjoy – after you properly put a plan in place for your return. This involves checking what sold, what didn’t, and what needs to be re-ordered ahead of time.
- Prepare. A month or two out, set advertising and social media in place to announce your seasonal reopening. Check inventory, again. Submit orders, if needed. Make sure your staff is also in place and scheduled for the first day and week and month.
- Practice. How can the lights not work? Why are the lines unmanageable? Why did we run out of ice? When you rehearse a “Mock Day One” (more than once, perhaps?), you can’t go wrong. If something should go awry, have someone designated to apologize immediately and offer appropriate make goods.
Day One of a seasonal business is just too important to leave to chance, so give it the attention it deserves.
