With school graduations right around the corner, it’s almost time to start humming Pomp and Circumstance. It’s also time to acknowledge your youngest customers, who aren’t so young anymore.
Those tots you first met when they were still holding their parent’s hand are now driving themselves to your small business – and happy to show you their driver’s license! As a small business owner, these potential (or fairly new) customers may very well be customers for life, especially if they remain in or near your zip code.
One method to win over younger clients – and keep new ones coming back – is to become active in the school system’s scholarship programs.
Your local intermediate and high schools hand out numerous awards and honors every year around graduation time. Some honors are given on behalf of an important cause or special event. Other scholarships are in the memory of someone who lived in your community. And then there are scholarships from local small (and not so small) businesses and colleges for young people with aspirations to join your profession in the future.
Not only are you helping the next generation of young professionals, you are making a positive impact in your community as well as increasing your image and that of your small business in the process.
And your scholarship donation is not just a one-time event. Many schools print the scholarship benefactors in the graduation program. Some schools also hold awards nights and hand out scholarships and honors at a special ceremony, along with a list of the scholarships awarded.
Your small business should also acknowledge the winners, promoting your participation in the school awards program at your location, on your website, and even set up a special photo opportunity for your local papers.
But don’t wait for the award to be handed out to get your small business’ name out there. Many students do not even know there are scholarships available. While the school sends out reminders to students to apply for scholarships, you can also provide information at your business and on your social media platforms.
While the 2017 graduates are just about here, this is the perfect time to find out how you can get involved in next year’s class of 2018. Contact your local high school or board of education to see how you can play an important role in your community.
