The number of would be entrepreneurs that never get started because they have no clue what business to start never goes down. There are so many who have a burning desire to start their own business, but have no idea what that business should be.
While there is no cut and dry answer, successful entrepreneurs give the advice to ask yourself certain questions.
What Do I Know?
What do you know the most about? What industry are you skilled in? What is your passion? The answers to these questions are the roots from which your business could grow. This is where you start. The seed has already been planted and this knowledge is there. Consider what types of businesses could grow from what you already know and love.
What Do I See?
Now, look around you. What do you see happening? Do you see an issue, problem, or need? Is there something lacking in your area that could greatly benefit it? It may not even be something people realize they could use or need. You may hear people saying they wish there was a certain type of dinning establishment or more affordable childcare available, but it may not be that obvious. Look closely and take your time.
What Can I Do?
Once you see a need or a problem, consider what you can do based on the knowledge and skills that you have. Is there a way you could solve the problem by opening a business, using what you know?
Take note, while a passion and knowledge of the industry is much desired, it is okay to start a business that you know nothing about if you are passionate about it. The key is to educated yourself, and surround yourself with people who do know what they are doing.
What Will It Look Like for Others?
It is easy to jump all in once you have figured out what type of business startup will help you use what you know to fill a need that you see. There is one more step however. To really know what type of business you should start, you need to think through the customers experience on the front end.
What will customers get out of it? How will they be treated? Don’t wait until you are up and going to figure this out. You want them to have the experience you intend them to have, and that they want to have, from day one.
