The search for better productivity is never ending. We all want to get more done in a shorter period of time, and be more efficient while we do it. Why is that? Are we going to really enjoy all that extra time, or are we only going to try to do more when we have it?
It really doesn’t matter, since we aren’t going to stop looking for it. The quest is real. Sometimes it is easy to be productive and sometimes, it isn’t. How do you find that elusive productivity “sweet spot” and keep it? How can we stay consistent in our productivity once we really get in the groove?
1. Stop Multitasking
It sounds crazy, but multi-tasking is a productivity killer. To be more specific, it is a focus killer, and work productivity requires focus. Plenty of mindless tasks can be done somewhat simultaneously, but very little in work life is truly a mindless task.
Once your brain gets used to multi-tasking, that becomes its natural state. It cannot stay focused on one thing, and that is what kills productivity. It can be reversed, but it will take time. The only way to remedy the situation is to simply stop multi-tasking.
Try creating blocks of time for each thing that must be done, so that you know while you are focusing on one thing, that nagging task in the back of your mind has its own time to get done. Then you can work on training your mind to be fully focused on what it is working on currently.
2. Pay Attention to the “Sweet Spot”
The next few times you are totally in the zone, pay attention to where you are what time it is. Is it the end of the day, late at night, early morning, or just after lunch? Do you notice a pattern? This is likely when and how you naturally work best.
Use that to your advantage. Do that things that require the most from you during those times.
Again, this sounds counterproductive. It is, however, necessary. No matter how much we don’t like it, the human body is designed to need sleep, and when we don’t get it, things go wrong. Our brains and bodies do not function properly.
Improperly functioning brains and bodies are what are truly counterproductive. Being well rested is one of the key ingredients to consistent productivity. Never work while you are tired if you can help it. It will only result in having to redo what you couldn’t do well while lacking sleep.
