There are many trains of thought on how to read people. Supposedly you can tell a lot about a person from how they sleep, their handwriting, and even how they keep their desk at work. There may really be something to it, and actually what your desk at work looks like could say a lot to your employer and co-workers.
A desk can speak to an employee’s creativity, dependability, and even their personality. While it shouldn’t be relied on totally, as other factors such as employee culture and work culture play a part, it shouldn’t be completely ignored either.
What does your desk say about you?
Are you an extrovert who enjoys socializing? Then you probably leave your door open and have your desk and office area decorated in a homey manner. There may be comfortable chairs and a candy dish inviting others to come in, say hi, and grab a bite.
This is a great quality, as long as it facilitates productivity rather than prohibiting it. Also, a closed door does not mean that someone is an introvert; it could simply mean that the person is busy.
It can be dangerous to put too much into this one, but it is definitely worth consideration. An organized desk portrays dependability. It could mean you are on time, stick to deadlines, and get the job done. Of course, it could also mean that you aren’t working.
A messy desk could mean you aren’t dependable, or that you are working so hard to meet deadlines that you have not had time to straighten your desk.
The thing to remember is appearances do matter, and habits form quickly. If you are not a neat freak, be sure to pay attention to how your desk looks most of the time. If you see a habit of chaos, work to make some changes. You don’t want to give the impression that you are not dependable.
Employers would do well to note productivity along with desk appearance before making assumptions.
What about décor?
While décor is deeply personal and not always indicative of anything substantial, it can give insight into how creative the employee may be. Uniquely decorated desk spaces, or even just one unique item, could show a creative spirit at work.
