Office shifting isn’t something you always think about until it is time to make the change. Moving is never fun, but it can be beneficial in certain situations. Maybe you save on rent, gain more space, or both! It isn’t something that just happens however.
Changing locations takes a lot of time, effort, and planning. Business doesn’t stop while you do it either. You have to plan and execute the move while running the business at the same time.
Don’t Underestimate What it Takes
It takes a lot to move. You simply can’t wait until the last minute and just drive your stuff to the new place. You need to start planning early. Schedule movers if needed, and if not, plan how you will get the physical belongings of the business to the new location without them.
Make a list of all the things that need to be done related to the move. You need to change your contact information on everything. This is more than just updating your website. You have to order new business cards and change any other publications that have your information on them. Be certain to place orders so new batches will arrive before the move takes place.
You also need to let customers know now, with plenty of notice that the change is coming. Don’t wait until you are already moved to put the word out. The same goes for vendors. Getting word out ahead of time with help ensure a smooth transition.
Additionally, you’ll need to update utilities, switch service to the new location, and make an address change with the post office. You can schedule the date the change is to take place and then you don’t have to think about it again.
Start well before the actual move date going through things and getting rid of stuff. If you have boxes you haven’t opened, outdated brochures, or equipment that doesn’t work, do not move it with you. The more you get rid of now, the less you have to move.
Once you begin business in the new office, be sure to follow through and let everyone know. If the old location is empty, put a note on the door for a few days. Post the news on all your social media accounts, put an ad in the paper, and add it to your voicemail message. Make sure any employees in other locations are away, and make certain all bills and deliver accounts have the new address.
