There really is more to running a business than making money. That is the end game, of course, but if that is all you ever do, what have you really accomplished? A business that doesn’t make money won’t be around to do anything else, but for those that are successful, giving back and making a difference is important.
Why is giving back important? For one thing, it is hard to be a successful business without a good reputation, and those small businesses that do something good for those around them have a better reputation than those that do not. Corporate philanthropy actually contributes to small business success.
It doesn’t always take money to give back either. You can give back through labor, time, and space resources as well. Here’s how.
- Offer Services Free of Charge
Of course you can’t do this for everyone, but you can find one non-profit that could benefit from your services but cannot afford them, and do whatever you can to help them. You could choose one pro-bono client indefinitely, or choose a new one each year or even each month. The logistics with depend on the services you offer and what the organization can actually use.
- Make Use of Unused Space
Do you have an empty office or unused storage space? Offer it to a local non-profit to use for storage or as offices for as long as needed or for a set amount of time, rent free. It won’t cost you anything, as the space is there anyway. The difference in electricity used would be negligible, and the relationship would be mutually beneficial as they get the space and you get to give something back.
- Encourage Volunteering Among Employees
It is one thing to tell your employees they should volunteer, but to really encourage them to do so consider offering time off, recognition for volunteer hours, or other incentives. Make it a team effort by scheduling volunteering opportunities the whole company can participate in.
If they don’t have to look for opportunities, they are more likely to get up and do something, generally.
