When their lease expired on a restaurant they owned on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in 2005, Angelo Britto and his father, Jose, sought a new location in a more suburban setting in which to open an eatery.
The Britto family settled on a location in the burgeoning downtown area of Harrison, NJ, where they opened La Fiamma Restaurant at 440 Harrison Ave.
“We wanted to open a restaurant in a small town,” Angelo said. “We found a great spot in Harrison, where there was a need for a good Italian restaurant.”
Financing for a small-town eatery such as the one that the Brittos have operated in Hudson County, NJ, for the last 12 years can be facilitated with a small-business loan. And choosing a location that is either reliably stable, or one that is on the upswing, helps, too.
Since La Fiamma opened, Harrison has become more of a hot spot with the construction and opening of Red Bull Arena, a major professional soccer facility, five years after La Fiamma opened its doors in New Jersey.
The philosophy at La Fiamma is always oriented toward the customer.
“We combine great food with four-star service at La Fiamma,” Angelo said. “We stay on top of everything. Our goal is to please our customers 100 percent, and to make sure they come back. We never say ‘no’ to our guests.”
In addition to an impressive dinner menu with selections of pasta, chicken, veal and fish, the restaurant provides an Early Bird menu that is in effect between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. A choice of soup and appetizer, one of four entrees (Penne Alla Vodka, Chicken Francese or Marsala, Veal Francese or Marsala, and Salmon Piccata) and dessert and coffee or tea are offered at a discounted rate during Early Bird hours.
There is also a separate menu for lunch at La Fiamma, an extensive selection of appetizers and salads, and copious desserts prepared fresh on the premises at the restaurant. Each item on the menu is made to order using fresh ingredients which are, whenever possible, locally sourced, according to the owner.
“We aim to keep the customers we have, and to target new customers,” Angelo said. “We see our customers coming back.”
La Fiamma has room for 50 patrons in its dining room as well as a banquet room that seats 70.
