I drove into our local shopping center on Memorial Day morning to quickly take care of a few chores. Since it was a holiday weekend, I expected to see a burst of patriotic pride among the small businesses that occupy that space.
Unfortunately, there was nothing: No flags. No banners. No balloons. No patriotic signage.
This particular strip mall has a number of big box stores on the corners, which is expected. But there were also hair cutters, pizza parlors, dry cleaners, as well as other small businesses, such as a gym and dentist and physician offices. Quite a variety of shops to attract a range of customers. And this three-day holiday weekend would have been the perfect opportunity for these small business owners to show their patriotic pride.
As a small business owner, you cannot assume that summer leads to the withdrawal of local customers to parts unknown. This season is full of festive opportunities and patriotic ones, too. Now that summer is here, why not put out colorful ways to invite more customers into your small business?
Here are a few suggestions to show customers how much you care this summer:
- Get Colorful: The aforementioned red, white, and blue is always a crowd pleaser, especially with July 4th just around the corner. Also, attention-grabbing, colorful, and bouncy, balloons are an inexpensive way to put out some color.
- Acknowledge Service: There are certainly plenty of veterans who are likely to be your customers as well. Why not place a sign prominently in your store thanking them for their service to our country? You also can extend service applause to your police, first aid responders, and fire departments.
- Say Thanks from The Heart: Take your patriotism one step further and provide a discount to service members and their families. Thanking those who serve is something that is never out of date and always appreciated. And don’t forget to notify your local military installation that your discount is available as many families are transient and may not know about your generosity.
- Spread the Word. Make sure to promote your patriotic pride in all your advertising efforts. From ads in local papers and on the air to social media platforms. Your home pages will be full of eye-catching color and your customers, especially those serving your neighborhood and country, will appreciate the gesture.
So, as summer begins, put your patriotic promotions in place and make your local business stand out even more.
