After lunch often comes the midday slump when your energy level crashes and all you want to do is take a nap. As a small business owner, you cannot afford to decrease your output while at work. Oftentimes, this means self-medication through the form of caffeine to keep up your productivity.
Though caffeine will do the trick, there are much better and healthier ways to ramp up your efficiency by incorporating some new routines into your midday break.
Yoga Break – There is nothing like a little exercise to jolt your nervous system awake. Yoga is a great choice as it allows you to clear your mind while also stimulating your nervous system. The stress from the morning will dissipate and you will be energized to focus on the tasks at hand after lunch. If yoga is not your cup of tea, consider other forms of stimulating exercise that are not too taxing, such as jogging, light weightlifting, or even a short stretch.
Ten-Minute Meditation – Daily meditation is a great way to improve mindfulness and inner peace. Much research has demonstrated the positive effects of long-term meditation. You do not need to spend too much time every day. The key is to continue your meditation practices every day. Performing your meditation during midday allows you to reset your mind and refocus on the tasks later on during the day.
Go for a Walk After Eating – With all that food in your stomach shunting your blood flow to your gastrointestinal tract, you will feel drowsiness. A good way to wake yourself up naturally is go on a walk after eating lunch. You will increase blood flow into the rest of your body and brain, while also burning off some calories. Walking is also a great time to think intensely about small business matters. Many successful people attribute their creativity to their daily walks.
Don’t Multitask While Eating – As a small business owner, you are faced with endless tasks every day. Nevertheless, try your best to avoid multitasking while eating. Your body and mind need a break from hours of exhaustive work in the morning. Working while eating will prevent you from getting the rejuvenating rest that you need. Furthermore, you will also be less productive with whatever task you are trying to do, so you are failing to take a break and also failing to accomplish the task at hand.
Read Something Non-Work Related – After many hours spent sitting in front of your computer reading emails and documents, your eyes need a break from the screen and your mind needs a break from the chaos of the morning. This is a great time to pick up that novel or magazine you have been meaning to read. Let your mind relax as you read something not related to work. Taking care of your mind will make you a much better small business owner.
