Even if you’re still employed by another company, there are steps you can take to start making a real difference, get noticed, and make the connections you’ll need to succeed in the entrepreneurial world later on. Here’s what you should do to start making a difference at the company where you currently work:
- Take on Extra Projects
Are there improvements that can be made in certain areas of your department? Is there a project that’s been sitting in the “later” pile that nobody has gotten around to? Take on the extra work, and it’ll show your diligence and dedication. It’ll also be great practice for you in self-managing, as you’ll be taking on your own project and getting it done on your own. That’s what you’ll be doing as a small business owner, so you might as well get some practice ahead of time.
- Ask for Feedback
You may have strengths or weaknesses that your experienced superiors have noticed that you didn’t even know you had. As a small business owner, you want to be fully aware of what you’re good at and what needs work. Meet with your supervisor every week, if possible, to ask about your progress and any areas in which you can improve. This will help you become a better, more effective employee at your existing company, but it will also arm you with knowledge that will help you later on when you become your own boss.
- Sit in on Meetings
Is there a meeting in another department that you’re really interested in attending? Ask the organizer if you can sit in on it. It’s always a good idea to learn more about other areas in a business because you’ll get a better sense of how everything comes together in a big company. This will prepare you for the future, when you’ll be managing all these different departments as the CEO and business owner.
- Collaborate with Others
Collaboration is a big part of any business, but nowhere is it more crucial than in a small business. With such a small team taking on such big goals, all the individuals must work together effectively and efficiently. Take on opportunities at your existing job to work with others, learn from them, and figure out collaborative techniques that work for you and others. Not only will you be making a great impression on your existing co-workers, but you’ll also be picking up life skills you’ll need as a business owner down the line.
